Alienation
A film about family and UFOs.
Synopsis
A lifelong alien enthusiast travels to a close encounter with his son, but it’s thanksgiving and his wife wants him to come home.
Sonny Roberts, a supposed legit abductee, was told 12 years ago to return to the field he was taken, on this Thanksgiving day, and to bring friends. Will, a middle age family man hears of this, lies to his wife Rachel, and travels with his son Toe to take part.
As the day turns to night, and the aliens still not arriving, the stakes rise for Will. Rachel learns of Will’s deception and begins the travel herself, to pick up her son Toe and leave Will for good.
Later, we finally learn of Will’s true drive for being at the field. Rather than just wanting to meet the Aliens, he wanted to show his son that he wasn’t crazy. He tells Toe the story of him and his own father being abducted, and he did not back up his father’s story out of fear. The guilt from that drives Will to show the world what happened was real, and that all of the time he spent trying to prove it was not in vain.
Through the night, Will’s friends leave as their motivations to stay are not as strong as Will’s.
When Rachel finally arrives, Will has a choice. Stay at the field with Sonny Roberts and take a chance at meeting the aliens, or go home and always be thought of as crazy. He chooses to stay, and his family leaves.
Soon after, Will has a conversation with Sonny – the man who told Will the aliens are coming tonight. And it turns out, Sonny is a fraud. He explains he made some of the same mistakes Will has, and just wanted to be admired like his family once did.
Sonny leaves, and Will is left alone, devastated. He has lost everything.
Then, a light shines down from above. A UFO.
